![]() ![]() ![]() The novel explores the idea of a male linguistic system and how this dominant male linguistic system is linked to Anna’s insecurities. Family in Voyage in the dark is (much in a similar way to Brave new world) represented nearly entirely negatively. Sex in Voyage in the dark is used as a weapon by the character of Walter, he is a dominant male, he forces Anna into a submissive role. Why and how does the state use this fear of the family unit as an agent to retain their power from the masses. Family in Brave new world is represented as dangerous, something to be feared. The government encouragement of sex is due to their wish to stay in a position of power. Sex is encouraged by the state for both sexes sex is used to divert and distract the population and keep the populace subdued. In Brave new world, one of the side effects of the totalitarian society is that men and women are relatively equal, because status is organised in other ways. Both texts also have a lot to say regarding to the representation of masculinity and femininity. I will explore the ways these themes manifest themselves in different ways in each text, and are used as agents of control. Sex and family are themes that appear extensively in Brave new world by Alodus Huxley and Voyage in the dark by Jean Rhys. ![]()
